Civil Engineering Technologist/Technicians

I wanted to just get a job at something and go to work after high school but my parents never let up.  They wanted me to get a post-secondary education because they were convinced you can’t get a good job with only high school.  They obviously didn’t know about the kind of opportunities there are in the construction industry.  Anyway my parents wanted me to keep going to school and at the end of the day I wasn’t going to disappoint them.  While I was at school we visited a community college with a civil technology program and that had seemed pretty interesting to me so that’s what I did.  I can’t say I actually planned out my future but it couldn’t have worked out any better. I’m working for a geotechnical engineering company and half the time I’m out on the jobsites taking samples of asphalt or soils or concrete and the other half the time I’m in the lab testing them.  I even have a licence to operate the nuclear gauges we use to test compaction on the roads.  I have a great job.  It’s interesting, lots of variety, good pay and all kinds of different things I can do in the future.
