Electrical Engineer

All I knew when I went to university was I wanted to be an electrical engineer.  I never really thought about what kind of job that would get me. I probably saw myself working for Hydro or something like that. Construction wasn’t really on my radar even though I realize now electrical power systems are a basic part of construction.  What originally tipped the scales toward construction was that when I graduated I had an offer for an in-house electrical engineer from a design-build contractor that paid way more than the other couple of offers I got for jobs in the consulting engineering sector.  I found out quickly that construction has all of the challenge and job satisfaction I was looking for. My job gives me a good mix of systems design in the office at the computer and supervising installation onsite.  I like the variety. I don’t think I would last if I was at the computer all day every day but I do like the design end of things.  We build mid-rise condominium developments and one project can have 500 units in several buildings.  I work with the senior engineer and one more woman and between the three of us we design all of the wiring systems, the lighting, computer connections and high voltage systems in our developments – basically anything that works with electricity.
