Mechanical Engineer

I became a mechanical engineer because I’ve always liked to figure out how things work and fix them if they don’t work.  That’s what I did when I was a kid.  When I got new toys all I cared about was how they worked.  My mother told me I should be a mechanical engineer when I grow up so since I was about six I’ve been telling everyone I was going to be a mechanical engineer.  LOL. Now I am one.  Right now I work for a big general contractor and I do just about everything that has to do with maintaining machinery on the jobsites.  I’m responsible for the cage lifts that run up the sides of new buildings or if we have any concrete mixing machines onsite or things like that.  I inspect pretty well anything with a motor or moving parts and if they need work I make sure it happens. I like the idea of working a few jobsites at one time, being outside a lot of the time and being really hands on with the machinery I look after. Actually there are a lot of choices for mechanical engineers that seem a like more exciting than construction and that’s where most of the graduates go now but I like the construction industry because its way more practical.  Plus I figured if everyone else was going into the research and really hi-tech mechanical fields, there would be more opportunity in construction. One of the other things that I could do in this industry and that I think I want to try someday is getting into designing mechanical systems for new construction.
