Driller/Blaster

Why do I like my job? Okay, like don’t think I’m a fanatic or anything but it’s pretty awesome watching the side of a mountain blow up.  It’s even more awesome when you’re the one that drilled the holes and placed the explosives.  That’s just the end of a whole process and a lot of hard work but it’s a great climax. Why else? I like working outdoors, especially up here in the North. The money gives me a good living and every job is a different challenge.  I’ve blasted a lot of rock for the highway corridors up North those cuts are works of art.  Do you know how much skill is involved in blasting out the side of a 40-foot rock hill and ending up with a perfectly smooth rock face? I started with this company when I was 18. Maybe I should have finished high school but I wanted to get out working and making money.  I got hired as just a general worker and drove the dump truck a bit, moved the equipment around, handled the blasting mats, things like that.  After a couple of years I really wanted to learn how to do the drilling and blasting so I took the certification courses.  I don’t think you really have to be certified but it could be dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing so I think everyone that does this job should be certified.  It’s part science and part art.  You can do all the calculations about spacing the holes and depth and how much explosive and what kind and then when you get all that just right you can still get a bad blast.  You have to know the rock too, as much as anyone can know how rock is going to break and that comes with experience.
