I actually started out shingling houses and small buildings with sloped roofs and I did that for about five years.  I was working for a small guy and basically it was just the two of us.  It was a good enough job and the pay was okay but there were some times when he didn’t have any work so the money dried up. We were mostly doing re-shingling and it was a pretty small town so sometimes we had to drive a long way to jobs.  Anyway I got married a couple of years ago and I needed something steadier that paid a bit better.  My wife works in education and it made sense for her to be closer to the city so we moved and I got a job as a trainee on the flat roof crew.  It didn’t take too long to learn the job and right from the start I made much better money, although it costs a lot more to live in the city too. I’ve been at this company for four years now and we do all kinds of flat roofs but they have a whole division that also does waterproofing of basements and decks and things like that.  Funny – one is on top of the building and the other is usually at the very bottom but roofing and waterproofing are basically the same thing.  You’re installing waterproof materials or membranes to keep what’s underneath dry.
