Equipment Manager

I’m a licensed heavy duty mechanic and I worked in the shop here for years before they made me equipment manager.  Still I like to get under the hood with the tools once in a while just to keep sharp but I don’t have much time for that anymore.  I have six people working for me and just keeping them on track and organized is a big job.  Inventory is a challenge too because if you don’t keep track you either run out of something just when you need it or somehow things just disappear.   The other big thing is safety.  I have to make sure the people in the shop work safely and nothing in there is going to be a hazard to them.  That means protective equipment, making sure our equipment is working properly, storing the hazardous materials properly and keeping the place clean.  I’m a real clean freak and my boss tells people you can eat of the floor of the truck bays in my shop. I like the responsibility of making sure everything comes together to make sure our equipment is running well and ready when they need it.  I’m responsible for recommending purchases of new equipment to our owners and I really enjoy looking over all the new stuff and figuring out what works best for us – and how to get a good deal on it.  We used to own most of our own equipment here but things have changed a lot and now we lease most of it.  For me that still means having to decide what equipment does what we need it to do and making sure it’s here when we need it.
