Plumber

First I have to say it bugs me that a lot of people think that plumbers just fix leaky taps and toilets.  Go through 32 weeks in a classroom and put in five or six thousand hours in an apprenticeship program and then tell me what you think plumbers do? There’s a reason this is a certified trade and you can’t do it without the right training. Sorry, rant over, but my job is way more than taps and toilets although we do both of those too.  You have to learn to cut and bend the pipes and there’s a million ways to join them.  Now that I’m into the industrial/commercial sector I’m putting job estimates together and the blueprints are lot more difficult than the ones I learned at school. How I got into this is an interesting question.  I grew up in a small town west of London and I got a part-time job after high school with the plumbing contractor.  I knew enough bookkeeping to fake it and I just kept all his stuff in the right files.  Plus I had to call the people who owed him money and that really sucked.  I was always complaining that I needed more hours and a raise and finally the owner said if that’s what I wanted I should take the training and work for him as a plumber.  He had three men and one was going to retire and he offered to take me on as an apprenticeship.  Wow, talk about big decisions but I did it.  I figured I could always quit if I didn’t like it.  I didn’t quit and the closer I got to my certification the more I knew it was the best decision of my life.
