GIS Assistant

So what does someone do with a Bachelor degree in geography? That thought crossed my mind a few times when I was at university; I thought might be a teacher. But I didn’t think much about the future because studying geography was what I wanted to do. I was introduced to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in my second year and I realized it was perfect for me. I like working at the computer and GIS work is all about the computer and using it to create useful information from raw data is a very satisfying challenge. It’s hard to explain exactly what I do. I work for a consulting engineering firm and in my department we are managing geographical information for construction clients. Our biggest client is the Ministry of Transportation even though they have a lot of in-house GIS people. We make a lot of maps in my department but it’s a lot more than that. Basically we collect information from lots of sources like old maps and digital land data and store it in the GIS system. Then we can analyze, integrate and manipulate the data to produce new maps and reports depending on what the client wants.
