Structural Steel Installer

To me steel means strength. That’s how I feel when I’m installing girders or beams for a new building.  Nothing is stronger, more powerful than steel.  When you look at all the beautiful buildings we put up today, I feel proud when I think that under all of the window dressing I helped to erect the solid steel skeleton made of the strongest, most durable construction material there is. I actually started out in the other side of our trade as a reinforcing steel installer – we call it rebar.  I enjoyed that work getting floors in new buildings ready for concrete.  It wasn’t easy and you have to be pretty physically fit but you also have to be able to look at the diagrams and figure out exactly how to place the steel or the concrete is going to fall apart.  I figured I would probably be doing that for the rest of my life, and that was fine with me, but I had also taken a course in welding just after high school and my boss said if I was interested and wanted to get my welding certificate he needed a new guy on the structural side.  What the heck, why not? It was the best decision of my life. I can’t think of any other word that ‘exhilarating’ to describe how I feel every day working outdoors, up high on these monster steel beams.
