Heavy Equipment Operator

I have three older brothers in construction and two of them are heavy equipment operators. I got really ticked one Christmas when they were all joking around about how I should follow the family tradition and get a job in construction.  I decided right there I was going to do it and I also decided I was going to operate equipment too. To be honest I don’t know where I would have ended up if I didn’t make that decision.  I sure wouldn’t be making the money I am today and I’d probably be stuck in office somewhere sitting at a computer screen. It’s been a long haul but I’m gradually getting there.  The first thing I did was take a training course in heavy equipment operation at college and I found out I was pretty good on the small equipment they had there.  It’s a lot harder than you think and you have to be concentrating all the time or you can cause a lot of damage. Fortunately my brother got me my first job with his company and for a long time they wouldn’t let me operate anything but the mini skid steer loader.  I learned how to check out my machine every day and make sure it’s oiled and ready. You really have to prove yourself in this trade to get ahead.  That’s how it works.  When you show the company you’re really good on the smaller, beginner equipment then gradually they move you up to the dozer and the back-hoes. I want to operate one of the really big excavators someday but right now I’m really happy working the small CAT dozer they’ve got me on.  My boss told me recently that he likes woman operators because they take care of their machines way better than the men.
