How I got into construction is a bit weird but this is true.  I’m a single mom so I never got a chance to go to college.  I was working at the bank as a teller and we were living at my parent’s house so I just got by every month even though my mom looked after my son.  Then my mom and dad were getting a bit too old to manage every day and no way I could afford day care on the bank pay.  So I started looking at careers on the internet and I went through hundreds.  I looked a lot in health care because that’s where the jobs of the future are supposed to be.  Don’t believe it.  Anyway, it ended up that surveying was perfect for me.  It matched all my conditions. It’s outside work with lots of variety, and I like that.  I found out the construction industry is a very secure one as far as jobs go and most of all it pays way better than the bank. I had to take courses which took a while because I had to work too and look after my son, but I finally got my surveyor’s licence and then I have to admit I got lucky.  I got hired right away by the city we live close to.  It’s a great job – actually it’s a great career.  I’m doing all kinds of things.  One day I might be shooting a city road and the next day I might be sighting property lines.  And working for the city I have great benefits and even a pension plan.
