Heavy Equipment Mechanic

I always knew I wanted to be a mechanic, except when I was a kid I always thought it would be working on cars.  My dad was never a certified mechanic but he could have been.  Our garage was just like a mini repair shop. He always had one or two old cars he was trying to get back on the road and by the time I went into an apprenticeship I already knew a lot of what I needed to be a car mechanic.  To be honest, finding an employer to take you on as an apprentice isn’t always that easy and that’s how I ended up working on heavy equipment rather than cars. I went for an interview with a big equipment dealer – I was getting kind of desperate – and by the time I left I’d changed my whole career plans. Their shop was amazing.  Everything just seemed bigger and more powerful than what I was used to in a car shop. There were tools there I’d never seen before and when you look under the hood of some of those big trucks and machines the technology blows your mind. Two days later they offered me the apprenticeship and I jumped at it.  I completed my whole apprenticeship in that shop and I’m still here at the dealership where we maintain all of the equipment they sell and rent out.  I still work on cars a bit at home as a hobby but heavy equipment was definitely where I was meant to be.  My future is pretty well guaranteed now and I guess if I wanted I could work for a contractor and look after their equipment but for now I’m quite happy right where I am and I still have a whole lot to learn.  In this trade you have to be learning all the time or you’ll become obsolete pretty quickly.
