Surveyor



Land surveyors plan, direct and conduct legal surveys to establish the location of real property boundaries, contours and land features, and prepare and maintain drawings, plans, records and documents related to these surveys. They also analyze engineering plans, survey data, photographs, computer and other info. They stake boundaries and underground facilities, documenting data as directed.They are employed by governments, land surveying establishments, engineering and construction firms, or they may be self-employed.

Duties:

  • Helps to develop survey plans, and procedures for conducting legal surveys
  • Conduct surveys to establish and mark legal boundaries of different land masses, roadways and highways
  • Survey and layout subdivisions for rural and urban development
  • Determine locations using electronic distance measuring equipment and GPS
  • Locate property corners, section corners, and other structures
  • Set up and operate level, transit and distance meter and record all measurements
  • Drives nails, stakes and iron pins at designate points into the ground

  • Excellent communication skills for maintaining relationships with employees and public
  • Knowledge of GPS equipment, transit, theodolite, level, and other equipment

  • Ability to read blueprints, maps, plans and layout sheets and keep legible survey notes

Education:

    A high school diploma is required

Program Description:

In the Civil/Construction Engineering Technology diploma program you gain a balanced education in civil engineering theory, combined with practical work in laboratories and in the field.  You become familiar with the structural properties of timber, steel, masonry and concrete and study the design of roads, buildings, Structures water distribution and sewage and drainage systems. Technical communication is covered in this course.

Program Description

Basics in geomatics, surveying and mapping, navigation, sensors, and measurements to assist in building a strong foundation in the discipline. Students will take Geodesy, Advanced Surveying, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), Measurement Theory and Estimation, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry, Survey Law and Land Registration Systems, Advanced 3D Techniques, Mobile GIS and Location-based Services, Sensor Integration and Advanced Field Surveys courses. You will learn and use advanced state-of-the-art instruments while putting your professional skills to the test.
