Steel Installer (Reinforcing Rod Worker)



Reinforcing steel installers reinforce concrete. They install various materials such as steel to provide strength to concrete. They install steel and other materials in the construction of various structures including buildings, bridges sewers and highways.

Duties:

  • Installing and repairing the metal structures that form the steel skeleton of buildings, bridges an towers
  • Installing structural and architectural concrete components for buildings, bridges, towers and other structures
  • Welding or bolting steel in place
  • Installing ornamental metalwork
  • Signaling crane operators to lift/move steel
  • Installing scaffolding

  • Work safely as a team, following written and oral directions
  • Ability to work with heavy equipment
  • Working from heights

  • Problem solving skills to provide solutions to challenges

Education:

    Apprenticeship is required

Education Requirements :

  • Completion of high school is mandatory
  • Apprenticeship: 6000 hours-5280 hours on the job and 720 hours in school
  • An ironworker is a voluntary trade in Ontario

Program Description:

The Ironworker program offers the student both theory and practical exposure to all aspects of the Ironworker trade including structural erection and dismantling, reinforcing, post-tensioning, rigging, and cranes just to name a few. Upon successful completion of all block level training the student is then eligible to write their certification exam or Red Seal.
