Roofer (residential)



Roofers install, repair or replace flat roofs and shingles, shakes or other roofing tiles on sloped roofs. Roofers may also waterproof buildings, foundations or other structures. Industrial roofers work on roofs of houses. They may be self employed or work for home builders.

Duties:

  • Installing, repairing or replacing roofing systems using materials such as asphalt and gravel.
  • Installing, repairing or replacing shingles and other roofing tiles
  • Applying waterproof coating to concrete surfaces
  • Installing and repairing metal roofs using hand and power tools
  • Installing scaffolding to provide safe access to roofs
  • Estimating required materials and costs.

  • Apprenticeship: 7,400 hours- 6,440 hours of on-the-job and 960 hours of in-school
  • Roofing is a voluntary trade in Ontario

Program Description:

Individuals need to complete a four year apprenticeship program. Once you successfully complete the required on-the-job training, technical training and exams, you are awarded a journeyperson certificate. If you have more than three years “on-the-job” experience, and some high school, college or industry courses in roofing/shingling, you may be eligible for certification in some provinces and territories.
