Drafter



Drafters prepare detailed technical drawings of objects that will be manufactured or built. Production and construction workers follow these drawings to build everything from radios to office buildings. These drawings show exact dimensions, materials to be used, and procedures to be followed.

Duties:

  • Gather information from engineers, surveyors, architects, codes, etc. to assist in the design
  • Use drafting tools and computer drafting (CAD) programs to prepare the drawings
  • Specify which materials are needed outlining specific instructions, based on design
  • Estimate sizes, quantities, time, cost, or materials needed

Education:

    A high school diploma is required

Education Requirements :

  • Completion of a two-to-three year college program in engineering design and drafting technology is usually required
  • Trade certification of draftspersons is available, but voluntary in Ontario through OACETT

Program Description:

The Civil/Construction Engineering Technology program provides education in civil engineering theory, combined with practical work in laboratories and in the field.  You become familiar with the structural properties of timber, steel, masonry and concrete and study the design of roads, buildings, structures, water distribution and sewage and drainage systems. Technical communication is covered in this course.
