CAD Highway/Building Designer



Drafters prepare technical drawings and plans. These plans are used by construction workers to build roads, buildings and other structures. Drafters’ drawings show the technical details of the products and structures, and specify dimensions, materials, and procedures.

Duties:

  • Visit job sites and WORK with engineers, to learn more about the structure to be drawn
  • Use drafting tools and computer-aided drafting (CAD) systems to prepare technical drawings
  • Specify which materials are to be used, determining actions and instructions, based on design
  • Refer to building codes, technical handbooks, and tables for information
  • Estimate sizes, quantities, time, cost, or materials needed

Education:

    A high school diploma is required

Education Requirements :

  • Two-to-three year college program in engineering design and drafting technology
  • Trade certification of draftspersons is available, but voluntary in Ontario
  • Certification through provincial associations of engineering (OACETT) may be required by the employer

Program Description:

In the Civil/Construction Engineering Technology program you gain an education in civil engineering theory, combined with practical work in laboratories and in the field.  You become familiar with the structural properties of timber, steel, masonry and concrete and study the design of roads, buildings, structures, water distribution and sewage and drainage systems. Technical communication is covered in this course.
